Absorbency level: As much as necessary – as little as possible.
It’s important to keep the absorbency level as high as necessary, to ensure skin health and reduce the risk of leakage. At the same time, we recommend finding the lowest absorbency that fulfills your specific need, in order to save natural resources. This is why looking at intended use, and carefully considering task, absorbency and size together, is essential to finding the right product.
Questions to consider when making your choice:
- How much liquid must be absorbed?
- Do you need to absorb a lot of liquid quickly, or do you need the underpad as extra protection in case of leakage?
- Do you need the underpad to remain dry on the surface for an extended period of time, or are you using it for a short period of time, (e.g. to protect a surface or prevent cross-contamination)?
Sizing matters
Depending on your intended use, size is a factor to consider. Different phases of labor and delivery require different sizes, and the needs for care of small wounds are vastly different from that of major surgery. As with absorbency level, the rule of thumb is to use a product as large as necessary, as small as possible.
A product that is too small increases the risk of leakage or cross-contamination, while a product that is too large is both costly and uses unnecessary natural resources.
Sustainability and the environment
If the environment is important to you, always be sure to choose the right product for your needs. Choosing the smallest product with the lowest absorbency level necessary saves natural resources.
However, don’t choose a product too small or too low absorbency – and run the risk of leakage or having to use extra products.
